From 1881 Saline County History:
James Wilhite was born in Washington Co, TN, August 1, 1796 and moved to west Tennessee and married Miss Charity Hays, July 25, 1815. In 1816 he came to Missouri and settled in what is now Saline County, four years before the county was organized. January 14, 1859, his wife died after they had lived together forty four years, and on the 10th day of March of the same year, at the solicitation of his children he married again. For the second wife he selected Mrs. Sallie C. Woolard and has ever since regarded the same as the best and most important act of his life.. He witnessed the great overflows of 1834 and 1844 and greatly assisted the sufferers in that disastrous time.
He vividly remembers how difficult it was to travel here in those early days, there being almost no roads, but hog paths and poor hog paths at that.
Mr. Wilhite was in the war of 1812, under GEN. Andrew Jackson, but was in no regular battles and has drawn pension for ten years. He was one of the men who built the first church in the county, 42 years ago, Cumberland Presbyterian. He is now 85 years old and the most active man in the county of his age.

Union Church Presbyterian
This church was located on section3, township 50, range 19. It was used by the Old School and the Cumberland Presbyterian and takes it name from that circumstance. The Old School congregation was organized in 1837, the Cumberland congregation was organized 1843.. The first members were Robert Dysart and wife; Ephraim McClaim and his wife; James Wilhite, wife and daughter; Carroll W. Ish and wife, Parthena Ish and Thomas A. Ish. The church building erected in 1844, frame, cost about $1600. During the Civil War it was burned by a negro who had stolen the chairs. It claimed to be the first frame church built in Saline County The membership of this church has become largely divided between Mt. Horeb and Arrow Rock. James Wilhite was one of the first elders.

Mt. Horeb Cumberland Presbyterian was organized Dec 26, 1859. James Wilhite was one of the Charter Members. First ruling elders were James Wilhite, Wm. Wheeler, William Ish and Dudly C. Cooper.
From "Portrait and Biographical Record of Lafayette and Saline Counties Missouri"; Chapman Bros., 1893:
William L. Ish born Jan 4, 1819 in Big Bottom, son of Jacob Ish.
In June 1838, he married Mary L. Wilhite, daughter of James Wilhite who was born in Tennessee and served in the war of 1812. Mr. Wilhite married in Tennessee but came to Missouri in 1815 and drove the entire way by team. He settled first in Howard county, but afterward lived in Big Bottom. In 1832 he located on the bluff. Mary L. Wilhite's mother was Charity Hays Wilhite, daughter of William Hays
Wilhite and Hays dug a well at the foot of the bluff and it is still in use (1893)
His father Jacob Ish was one of the first persons to cross the Lamine River and lived in the Big Bottom as a squatter, until the Land Offices opened at Franklin, Howard County Jan 4, 1819, when he located.
After William and Mary L. Wilhitee were married in 1838, he bought a farm of 160 acres, four miles south of Slater and first farmed with oxen. He hauled rails nine miles to fence his land and put up a log house and lived there until 1844 when he sold his farm and bought another. (He probably hauled the rails from what was later known as the Morrison Place. Authors note).
William and Mary Ish had three children: Thomas H. B., a farmer and a graduated physician; Margery, Mrs. Willis, resides in Clay Township and J.C.B. a graduate of McDowell's College, lives in Springfield, Missouri.
William Marion (Mainey) Wilhite, a prosperous farmer of Saline County, Missouri near Gilliam, is located on his fine farm of three hundred acres on section 13, township 51, range 10. He was born in the county in 1837 and is the son of James and Charity Hays Wilhite. His father was born in the year 1796 and was 85 years of age when he died. His grandfather Rueben Wilhite was a Tennesseean by birth. The father of our subject was in the War of 1812, through which he served. He became one of the first settlers in Saline County, coming here when it was wild land, which he at once began improving and one time or another he owned over 1000 acres.
The family of children consisted of three brothers and five sisters, of whom the sisters are still living.
Mary was born in the county, married W.L. Ish and they reside at Slater, where he is a farmer; Martha was born in Saline County, married MR. Woolard and they reside in Colorado; Elizabeth, born in Saline County, married James Johnson and they reside in this county; Sarah B, was born here, became the wife of Charlie Dennis and they reside in Texas; Naomi F. was born in this county and married Penn Duncan, a farmer in this locality. Our subject was married in this county to Miss Mary F. Morrison in 1862, they have no family.
Mr. Wilhite was educated in the common schools and later attended McGee College. He left school at the age of 20 years to engage in farming, upon a fine 300 acre farm, a portion of which was given to him by his father. He has made many improvements here, among which may be mentioned a new barn that cost $700 and the outbuildings compare very favorably with those in the surrounding county. Mr. Wilhite is an agriculturalist of a high order, and his grain, hay and stock are the best in the market. He thinks that the best always pays.
In local religious matters, Mr. Wilhite is always interested, and he and his good wife are consistent members of the Baptist Church, in which they have been active for several years past.
Politically, our subject affiliates with the Democratic party, believing that in the success of it, the country will make its best progress.
Both he and his wife are much esteemed in the neighborhood where they have so long resided.
W.M. Wilhite opened a grocery store in Arrow Rock in 1873. In 1877 he sold out and returned to the farm.
