Jackson Washington Cott, the oldest son of Solomon And Sarah Fort Cott, was born near Knightstown, Indiana, January 10, 1829 and was eight years old when they moved to Missouri.  In 1850, at the age of twenty one, he made the overland trip to California in search of gold.  He returned to Missouri by the water route, via the Isthmus of Panama.  From the gold he found in California, had had four rings made: one for Mary Jane, his wife, and one for each of his daughters, Nancy Belle, Sarah Frances and Bessie Edith.  The ring that was Mary Jane's was later given to Margaret Cott Bayne, and she later gave it to Lawrence Stanley Cott, who now has it.  The ring that belonged to Nancy Belle was given to her daughter Opal Bell Netherton Montgomery, who later gave it to her great-niece, Mary Vale Cott Jones.

In October, 1857, Jackson Cott married Mary Jane Wilhite, and in Dec they moved to the farm southeast of Gilliam, where they lived until 1904, when they moved to Okmulgee, OK,

During the Civil War, Jackson was in the militia and was in Indiana for a period of time.  He finally hired a substitute, John E. Johnson. A brother, Amos Wood Cott, Nancy Angeline Cott, and Catherine Cott were the children of Solomon and Sarah Cott and grandchildren of John and Catherine Mason Catt.
